SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) Certificates are generated by trusted third party providers. These certificates essentially tell visitors to your site that the applications and information on your site are genuine. They tell visitors that you are who you say you are, and that you will do what you say you will do.

Upon a visitor's confirmation of such a certificate, their web browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator) will allow them to view pages over a secure connection. A secure connection allows visitors to enter and receive information in a secure and encrypted format, negating the chance of that information being stolen or viewed by the wrong people.

Such a connection is critical for e-commerce applications such as credit card processing and receiving sensitive personal information.

What is SSL?
